Exploring Wales

« GO BACK

Travel Wales with the Great British Heritage Pass - explore the stunning regions and Welsh heritage properties of Swansea, Caernarfon, Carmathenshire, Caldicot and more.

Begin discovering Wales at Tintern Abbey, the impressive ruins of a 12th century Cisterian abbey. Continue towards Caldicot Castle and Country Park, and explore Calidot’s magnificent medieval castle, which is set in tranquil gardens and a wooded country park.

Within the grounds of the Brecon Beacons National Park visit Carreg Cennen Castle, a magnificently-set castle high on a limestone precipice. The remains include an underground passage and cave.

The Dolaucothi Gold Mines and Estate just north of the park show the evidence of Roman mining technology and later methods from the 19th and 20th centuries. A wealth of activities is available, including gold panning, an audiovisual display, visitor centre, mining machinery, children’s activity room, and sales of Welsh gold.

After a mining expedition, head into Dinefwr Park, and 18th century landscaped park and ancient deer park surrounding Newton Park.

Head towards the coast and Laugharne Castle, which is an early 12th century earthwork castle rebuilt during the late 13th and early 14th centuries, and later transformed into a Tudor mansion in the 16th century.

Take a break at Colby Woodland Garden, filled with rhododendrons and azaleas. Afterwards, explore Lamphey Palace, the substantial remains of a medieval bishops’ country residence.

Finish your tour of Wales at Cilgerran Castle, whose remains include a pair of highly defensible round towers from the first half of the 13th century.
